My goal this week is to define what optimal success is for quality of life. I’ll be posting a blog post every day around the idea of success. Today I’ll be exploring "What it means to be successful."
Where has this question come from?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be successful. There were times when I didn’t act like it, but the words “the sky’s the limit” were fed to me as a child before I even ate solid foods. I’ve realised I have an idea of success in my head that I don’t even know how to define fully.
When I do things that are exceptional, I get a sense of pride because the response I’ve started to get is “of course you did.” I’ve been reading books about business psychology for five years now. With every book I feel smarter, with every podcast I feel braver and I’m starting to find my feet.
Am I perfect now? Yes of course, but that deserves its own blog post (I may not be perfect but at least I’m funny). The truth is I know I could be moving forward in my life more optimally. There is so much I don’t know about success and life, and some things I never will, but I’m determined to know more. So, in the spirit of learning more, let’s look at the definition of success.
The definition of success:
Success is defined as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”.
Success is so broad. So subjective and open to interpretation, yet I’d argue many of us have similar ideas of success, especially in the western world.
We've defined what it means to be successful, but in order to answer what it means to be successful, I think we need to know what people think success is. So tune in tomorrow where we’ll look at what success is in the western world.
